Details
Borage seed oil has been used for thousands of years across the world for medicinal purposes, including Spain, Asia and Syria. Derived from the borage plant, borage seed oil is cultivated for dietary and cosmetic purposes. The oil-rich seed of the borage plant – often referred to as “starflower” due to the elegant blue star-shaped petals of the borage flowers, is pressed and the oil extracted. Pale yellow in colour, borage seed oil makes a fantastic carrier oil for essential oils of all types. It’s rich, incredibly nourishing and moisturising and can help with a vast range of skin complaints.
The Science Behind Borage Seed Oil
Borage seeds are one of nature’s richest sources of GLA (gamma linolenic acid), an omega-6 fatty acid which is responsible for regulating certain hormones. Essential for good health and well-being, this fatty acid cannot be made by the body and so must come from other sources. Surpassing evening primrose oil and blackcurrant for its GLA content, this rich and nourishing oil is an excellent source of GLA. Research has shown that GLA is responsible for regulating many hormonal responses in the body, including metabolism, clotting and blood pressure. Low levels of GLA within the body could cause a number of medical ailments, which is why it is necessary to obtain GLA through dietary supplements. When borage seed oil is taken as a nutritional supplement, it can improve the symptoms of multiple medical conditions, including diabetes and arthritis. When used for cosmetic purposes as a carrier oil, it can improve skin tone and texture, reducing symptoms of a vast number of skin complaints.
Borage Seed Oil as a Carrier Oil
Borage seed oil is hugely versatile and can be combined with a vast number of essential oils to create a highly nourishing oil that can be used topically, for massage, on the body or face. Some experts recommend using 50/50 borage seed oil with another carrier oil, such as almond oil or coconut oil. Add a few drops of the essential oil of your choice to create a bespoke, nourishing oil. Suitable for all skin types, borage seed oil is particularly useful for treating more sensitive skin – inflamed skin, mature skin, dry skin, hormonally damaged skin and damaged skin. It can also effectively treat scarring, cellulite, stretch marks and other surface skin complaints such as age spots.
Using Borage Seed Carrier Oil
Mix the borage seed oil with the additional carrier oil and essential oil/oils of your choice. Use sparingly on the affected area when flare-ups occur, or use daily to keep skin soft, supple and nourished.

Borage seed oil is not known to have any contra-indictions, although extra caution should be taken when being used by pregnant and breastfeeding women. If you experience any side effects, cease use and contact your doctor.
